You’ll drive yourself mad trying to find rational explanations for everything. It’s ironic in light of the God vs. evolution arguments that a lot of the tenets of organised religions are codifications of more ancient evolutionary behaviours. Most species don’t go around killing their own kind willy-nilly, especially not in their own community. Why does altruism exist? Because for most of human history, there has been a strong likelihood that the people we interact with on a daily basis share quite a lot of our genetic code.
